Choosing your career path – salon stylist – (Part one in the Series of 9)
HI there my friends, when a mentor told me to:-
“Design my lifestyle first, and then design my career to fit around my life style”.
I thought wow 35 years too late!
I wish I been more aware of this in my 20s! BUT I was consumed by my career and I confess my private life took a back seat. Now I am more aware that for every action there will be a reaction. So now I am applying this principle to my life.
My challenge to you today is what do you NEED verses WANT? Take some quiet time and ask yourself the following questions:-
- What is a perfect day?
- When do you I feel most rewarded?
- What do I love?
- What do I not like to do?
- What am I passionate about?
- Where do I want to be in 5 years?
- What motivates me?
- Who am I ? ‘People driven’ or ‘Task driven’?
- How much money do I realistically want to make?
- What price am I willing to pay for my dreams?
Start to Design your life, get out pen and paper, or better still journal your ideas, there is so much power in pen to paper. Build dream boards, put ‘post it’ notes on a wall listing what you love?

1. Salon Stylist
As you begin your career as a salon stylist, pick a salon that fits and inspires you, whether that be in a high end, family style, or a trend setting salon. I recommend you start off as an assistant in a high level salon and work your way through the ranks because of the potential for growth versus becoming a junior stylist in a lower level salon and hitting your growth ceiling sooner.
