Be careful who you learn from.
Hi there my Friends, Those in my close circle know how much I love horses. Over the years I have ridden and competed in England Cross country
Show jumped and now Dressage, and for those of you who have no idea what I am talking about?
Dressage is Dancing with horses, which also is an Olympic sport.
I have a story to tell. While I consider my self a keen student, hungry to learn from the best of the best I realize that my riding skills and the performance of my horse are only as good as my Trainer/Coach. Over a period of time the law of influence rubs off and “YOU BECOME WHO YOU HANG OUT WITH”
FYI- In the Dressage world you have a coach by your side constantly especially at high levels.
“EYES ON THE GROUND HELP YOU MOVE MORE QUICKLY TO THE NEXT LEVEL.” While many will say I am a good rider, good is ok but great is so much more exciting and I still have so much more to learn.
Watching Olympians ride I hear myself ‘say they make it look so easy’! Which is the greatest illusion of all! Its easy to envy the brilliant performance and Gold Medals. But how many of us would envy the handwork and countless hours in training to be the best of the best?
Its so essential to surround yourself with individuals who are already where you want to be. IRON SHARPENS IRON.
Now I am fortunate to be working with an international level trainer, verses a local teacher and wow what a difference. At first intimidated, but now I am hungry for more “SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO GET OVER THE FEAR AND JUST DO IT”.
My first realization before I can learn at this new level I have to unlearn, break bad habits, and then be open to learn and be patient with the new journey. Have you ever found when you tried something new, you took a step back, got discouraged? But if you stuck with the challenge it propelled you to new heights? This riding example is life its self. Forming great habits, working at optimum performance, for an optimum return.
I wish I had this insight in my youth. They say ignorance is bliss, but now I would disagree, in my blindness I missed so much.
Today I can see the power of being Mentored and when you move to the next level the rewards are so much greater. Thats living life to the fullest.
So moral of the story be careful who you learn from. Pick your mentors carefully.
