A cut above the rest

Screen Shot 2016-04-07 at 6.49.33 PMHi there my Friends, I love precision cutting and the creativity of the razor. When I use my scissors I feel like an architect building a strong shape, I confess I morph back to my Vidal Sassoon Days!
When I use my Razor I feel like a sculptor, and I am more playful, and yet both are wonderful tools to master.
In the early years of my career Trevor Sorbie encouraged me to revisit the razor. Ok I confess I was totally against the tool!! I tried to recreate soft looks with my scissors but it was not the same.

Then one day I opened my narrow mind to explore and said
“Why not go on an adventure?
How boring to be an artist who only paints in one color or one brush”.

As Wayne Dyers statement is so true.
“When you change the way you look at things,
the things you look at change”.

I took this statement to heart and it totally changed my world.  I got out my beloved Pivot Point Mannequin head (Viola) who thankfully never complaints and started to practice!!!!
Now as an artist, I do not put the following techniques in a separate box :- dress work, up styling, razor, color, precision cutting.
The newness is born through the fusion of ideas and the intermix of techniques.

For example these two styles from my Masters NAHA collection demonstrate ‘precision cutting’ using the razor and scissors, and ‘abstract razor cutting’.  Its all about a beautiful shape that fits from head to toe, creating an image that captures the personality of the model or client.
For some of you looking at these images you may say “my clients will not wear these styles” and if you believe that to be true then it is.
BUT,  I also know stylist that would say “Brilliant I have clients who would appreciate these looks”.

Often I think it is the geography of where we live in our minds, rather that the country or city.  I was recently in Vancouver Canada, visiting Suki’s Salons, I was fortunate enough to watch the stylists work in the salon and wow what great work there were producing behind their chair, and yes they do have clients to sport these looks.

Questions to ask your clients:-

1. Have you seen any fun styles that you would like to try? Let look at images.
2. Do you feel bored with your style?
3. Do you feel invisible, and that you look like everyone else?
4. Would you like something new, but do not know if it will work or suit you?
5. Can we take baby steps to try some new ideas?  (it could be a new way to blow dry)
6. Would you like to stand out from the crowd, or blend in?
7. Would you like an easier to maintain hair style (short cut correctly is always low maintenance)

Please join me for a very private class only 6 allowed in the class.
All the best Vivienne Mackinder.
